| Winchester 296 Reloading Question for 357 Mag
I am just getting started reloading 357 rounds and was hoping for some advice. I have: Winchester 296 Ball Powder Magtech 158gr SJSP bullets Mixed brass (some I have shot, additional from friends) Questions: 1. I am seeing a lot of mixed thoughts on the ability to use non magnum primers when using W296. Have people here done this, and if so, with what results? 2. I am also seeing some loads with Winchester 231, thought most on discussion boards recommend 296 (or other brands). Has anyone here used 231 on 158gn SJSP, and if yes, with what results? After looking through Modern Reloading, Hogdon.com, and Handloads.com, I am planning my first two trial loads to be with the 296 at 13.5 and 14.0 grains respectivally, using magnum primiers I will buy... Any comments on that? Thank you all! Chuck ![]() |

The 296 should give higher velocity for a given pressure. Dust off the chrony and do some experimenting. Be careful not to go below the minimum recommended by Winchester for this powder, lest you detonate.

I would stick to those for this powder and H110.

Thank you for the advice. I am starting my 296 test loads as stated above and will post the results tomorrow.

231 and similar fast powders will work but won't achieve magnum velocity. Fine for mild target loads. If I remember right 296 recommends a max load only warning against reduced loads. H110 is also the same powder BTW
