| ridiculous shipping cost for handguns
I sold a S&W 686 on GB, first time selling online and I very carefully read all the rules & regulations regarding shipping, FFL, what carriers I can use, pretty much limited to FedEx and UPS for handguns, so I went to UPS. I priced the shipping on GB at a fixed price of $35.00 for a US lower 48 shipment which is abot $5.00 more than what was being charged in other similar auctions figuring it would be close, maybe I would take a hit of a few $$$ no big deal. I knew a hand gun would have to go Next Day but was still floored when I got to UPS and they said it was going to be $106.00. I haven't shipped a hand gun in about 10 years, last time was to a smith in CA via FedEx, I recall that being around $50.00, have hand gun shipping prices gone through roof or what? Or is it just UPS? Maybe I should try FedEx again. Just wanted to get some feedback on what the best options are for shipping a hand gun so I can avoid this next time I sell. Thanks.

Both Fed-Ex and UPS now require shipping pistols the fastest way. This is to limit the time the gun is in their system, to prevent their people from stealing your gun. Before shipping check with both about options. There are some methods they can use that will save a little. If you're buddies with a FFL Dealer, he can mail pistols through the Post Office very cheaply. If you know a good Dealer, check with him about shipping. As long as he won't screw you over on the price you can save some money. One piece of advice. DO NOT do what some people will recommend, which is to lie and tell the shipper you're shipping "parts" or "tools" or some other non-gun item. When you ship a package, you're entering a legally binding contract with the shipper. Lie to them and you've broken the contract and defrauded them. If the gun is lost, damaged, or stolen they will pay you NOTHING. |

Go to usps.com and download form 1508. Your dealer can fill this out and ship a handgun to another dealer or manufacturer a lot cheaper than oops or fed t-rex.
