Is the area where you are setting up shop zoned to allow a commercial entity?
Liability insurance is suggested.
Setting up a LLC is a good recommendation.
Do you have storage area that is under lock and key?
As to what type of license, I suggest that you go directly to the BATF website and review the types available.

I also suggest that you stay away from these scammers who say that they need money to help set you up for your FFL.

Good advice.

The key here is the BATF wants to issue FFL's only to people who "Are in the business", and NOT hobbyists or people who want to use an FFL to buy personal guns or equipment to save money.

You have to have a state tax number and all state and local business licenses.
The area where you have the shop has to be zoned for that, and even if it is, you may well have neighbors try to prevent you from setting up there.

For personal protection you need insurance both for customers guns if you have a fire or burglary or you make a mistake on one, insurance if someone pulls a wifferdill and gets hurt with a gun you repaired (it's ALWAYS your fault), and insurance on anyone who gets hurt on your property.

As above the ATF web site has full info on the type of license and the requirements for security, etc.

If you are an NRA member you can also look into insurance through them. I know that this is a little late, but I just joined this forum myself, hope this will prove helpful to you. I too am a new certified (by Penn Foster College) gunsmith, looking at how to become able to do the work full time.
