I wouldnt shoot 45 super loads from anything but a beefed up 1911,(heavier recoil and firing pin springs.) hk's are +p capable but 45 super is quite a bit hotter, and the hammering of the internals would be punishing. wolf should have spring kits if you want to try some. |

| Re: 45 super I was just surfing through the site and saw this post on the .45 Super. Has anyone ever tried the Wolf Springs with good success. I have a .45 Super 1911. In my opinon ALL .45s that can be, should be converted to this wonderful cartridge. It makes so much sense. You can still shoot any other .45 round also. I would really appreciate hearing from any HK 45 user who has done this successfully. Thank you!! Quote:

This is a judgement call. When the Super came out, I called Texas Ammo Co. to ask their opinion of the HK's being used as a platform. Without saying yes it would, they told me yes, it would(wink, wink....). I proceeded to order a barrel from Bar-Sto (with the cut at the muzzle for the green o-ring) for my HK USP Compact .45. While a handful, it was far from abusive to the shooter. I find the S&W 640 .357 more punishing than the Super from the USP. After each time I shot it, I would borrow a friend of mine's machine shop to check for damage by Zyglow and x-ray. Other than changing the recoil spring often, their was no damage that I could discern. Hope this helps. |

Umm stupid question here but what is the .45 Super? I am taking it that it is more potent than the ACP but not as hot as the .460 Rowland...correct? Can anyone post ballistics here and perhaps suggest a place to find stiffer recoil springs for the USP if someone were interested? Is there any rechambering necessary and am I to assume from previous posts that it an still fire the ACP? Thanks.

| First note that .45 Super tends to a legally specific usage
In a chain of development traceable to Dean Grennell a somewhat standardized high performance load has been developed (including full power and tactical) a commercial smith Garey Q. Hindman of Ace Custom 45's has claims on the name and there have been some interesting disagreements with commercial loaders and such. Notice Ace Custom 45s does in fact do fine work and nothing here is intended to disparage any individual or business nor to comment on what it takes to make a 1911 live and work at high pressure. There is a lot of material out there on shooting hot loads in 1911's and I am not going to go there. Personally I looked seriously at the Tactical and Expert for the express purpose of handgun hunting with high pressure loads and decided that Rick Jamison is right, the 10mm is handy and useful. For my money the others defeat the purpose of handiness but are certainly the clear choice for high pressure loads. I have good first hand reports of the Springfield with vents for the .45 Super but again decided why bother with new leather and so forth. Yes the .45 Super guns from Ace Custom interchange with SAAMI spec .45ACP. Clark among others takes another tack to why bother and lengthens the chamber with porting for bigger numbers. There are intermediate efforts with ported Glocks and so forth and so on. |

Hey again! I agree with Clark on the fact of: If you want a 'magnum' gun, start with one. I was bored of the lack of 'personality' that plastic guns have, and thought I'd play around a little. The Super HK was hell on coyotes, but I really didn't build it with self-defense or hunting in mind. The recoil wasn't the killer, or even the splits....it was the muzzle flash and the lack of hair on the front side of my body that kept me from carrying the little monster! |

Sorry Hoser, no more to report! Sold off all my 'plastic' guns... Just steel, wood, ivory and leather for me from now on! |

Ok, so it sounds like the full size HK's will handle 45 Super loads, but do you need a new barrel or will factory barrel work fine? If new springs are needed, what weight springs are needed to upgrade and will this heavier spring still work with standard defensive ammo in 45acp like Federal HS? |
