I read that they were in the special edition 1911 magazine guns and ammo has put out.

Supposidly they hired Larry Vickers to be a consultant on the project.

Probably hoping not because there goes another $1000 out the door for a new 1911.

I would be really interested to see what H&K does with the platform.

Especially if Vickers helped them.

For the same reasons I despise the SIG 1911:
1) Mostly because the market it already flooded with 1911s. How many times can you reinvent the wheel before it simply becomes redundent? These days, the only thing that pisses me off more than reading about another 1911, is reading about yet another AR15.
2) We didn't try copy the Luger. Even though I feel there are better designs for combat and defensive pistols, I do respect the heritage of the 1911 and view it as a distinctly American icon.

Lastly, I feel that HK already has the best design on the market for defensive handguns, so why waste time on a 100 year old design. It seems like they are beating an already dead horse to death.[/i]

Robert,

if it is such an old design and there are so many others that are better then why the demand, especially from the LEO/Military?
The Sig was built to get the LEO/Military contracts that are out there right now calling for a 1911 style single action .45acp and that came from Paul Erhardt the Director of Marketing from Sig.
Not that I think anything is wrong with an H&K USP, but there is a reason why all these companies are making 1911's, people are buying them instead of a $800 polymer framed thick gripped gun.
What H&K should do is thin up the USP some, make a single stack version and slim the slide some, and make it here so there is no tarriffs that drive the price up so damn high.

Because nostalgia obviously means more to some people than it does to me. Usually, the people I meet who suggest our military should still be equipped with the 1911 are the same ones who suggest they should still be equipped with the Garand. I am all about the .45, but I honestly believe the USP series has the 1911 beat in everything that matters in combat.

Nostalgia?

Mr. Boren, I don't ordinarily get into pissin' contests on these message boards, but before you make such unfounded statements, I sugggest that you go and research the impressions of the guys who are going to have to
actually carry and use the pistols. Talk with Pat Rogers here:

http://www.thegunzone.com/m40a3.html#top

Pat is involved with the project, and has input from the guys who are shooting the guns, rather than relying on armchair commandos and gun rag writers for his database.

Here is an exerpt that I pasted for your viewing pleasure.

Concerning the SIG 220 as an option:
"It would not be viable for a number of reasons- it is DA, it is large, bulky and the durability is in question."

Concerning the MEUSOC craze in the public media:
"Some magazine authors base their articles on written documents, add a tint of conjecture, and sometimes some interviews with those who do or do not know. The users want the 1911. SYSCOM opened it up to others for their reasons. They may not be happy about that now."

"The facts are that we are at war. The 1911 is what is wanted and meets the user requirements. The changes requested in 1999 would have solved the problems, but didn't because of other issues. In the meantime, the Kimber is doing well, and meets the requirements."

"I too am amazed by the amount of concern re the MEU (SOC) too.
I am more amazed by the amount of garbage on the various forums about it, the Kimber and related subjects."

"I perused two threads on two different forums. Aside from a few steady hands, easily 99% of the comments were false, conjecture, or absloute nonsense. How did so many people- who have never actually seen the gun, never mind fired one- develop so much expertise about it, the doctrine behind its use, and the quality of the people who use it???"

Now, have a nice day....Hear?
