No your not crazy. It happened to me as well as a pistol shot friend of mine. They will take care of you.

I bought a cw9 and ran 300-350 rounds through it before it started dropping mags. So far it has only done it with cheap target ammo. After doing it for 3 mags, I switched to Speer Gold Dot to see if it was going to drop out if I actually had to use it later, and it worked fine. I'm going to do some more testing this week, but still call Kahr and see about a new spring.

PM40 magazine drop

I had a similar problem with the short magazine on my PM40. On the last round with the small magazine, the magazine would 'eject' 1/2" and the last round was not chambered. This happened 5 times over 170 shots, and only with the short magazine.

Kahr said they would send a metal magazine catch... but my Kahr is brand new (took delivery 3 days ago), and I believe the current catch is metal.

I keep range records, and here is what I recorded from the first 170 shots:
For these 170 shots: 7 FTF - all with short magazine; 5 Failure to return to battery - 3 short magazine, 2 long magazine; and, short magazine ejected 5 times on last shot, causing FTF.
I used Rem UMC 180gr FMJ, Win 180 gr JHP, Sellier & Bellot 180 gr FMJ (most jams here), and Federal Hydra-Shok 165 and 135 (no jams at all).

Anybody had a similar problem that was resolved? What did it take to fix it?

Re: CW9 Mag dropped

My problem was resolved by installing the stronger mag catch SPRING that Kahr sent me free of charge.

Suggest that you have a gunsmith install it, though.

Re: CW9 Mag dropped

the big difference is the metal replacement mag catch vs. the stock plastic one. kahr will send you one for free and talk you through installation. all you need is a small screwdriver. 500 flawless rounds through my P9 since

Re: CW9 Mag dropped

I don't see the causal connection between the plastic vs. metal mag catch. I think the problem is related more to the spring, not the catch. But maybe the metal catch is more secure and less likely to be depressed-just speculating. JMHO.

Re: CW9 Mag dropped

I just purchased a PM40. Today at the range, the 6 round mag would drop out after 5 rounds were fired. This happened several times. The 6th round remained in the mag. The 7 round mag did not cause any problems.

I will be calling Kahr tomorrow.

Re: CW9 Mag dropped

Having a PM-9 and a PM-45, I have had the same problems with the magazines "dropping" or being disengaged in the holster(s). The problem as I see it (and my gunsmith concurs) is that the Kahr has a single-wire spring for the magazine release. It is not a coil spring or a flat spring........ just a single piece of wire. I called them (Kahr) about the PM-9 problem and they are sending a new spring and the newer steel magazine release. I have yet to call about the PM-45 problem. I have the feeling that the customer service from Kahr is kind of "hit-and-miss", as I called over a dozen times about a faulty magazine which came with the PM-9 and FINALLY they replaced it after 13 months!! The one gentleman that seems most responsive in their customer service area is named Sean. I asked for Sean to discuss the weak magazine release spring. FYI, he told me they have NO HEAVIER springs for any of their product line and never have, but that he will send the new metal mag release and a new spring. I am wondering, and maybe one of the gunsmiths here can shed some light on the possibility of "piggybacking" two of the wire springs to get more tension. We shall see what transpires.
Best to all,
Jeffro

Re: CW9 Mag dropped

At this point in time I've never looked inside any Kahr pistol so I won't try guessin'.....Now concernin' springs....If You can't find springs to fit and they are coil springs , Find wire small enough or the right size for what You need and wind Your own...This is easy to do in a lathe, there are several Different tools that will do the job.

Flat springs are easy to make....I like 01 steel or 1095 ....file and bend to shape, then heat treate. Point is if the pistol needs stronger springs and Kahr can't furnish them ,Build Your own , then smoke their A$$ all over the internet.

And it could be bad KARMA  (If there is such a thing) ...DON"T THE "MOONIES" own Kahr??

Greetings Mr. Caldwell. The problem is that the mag release spring is neither flat nor coil. Unfortunately, the spring is a single section of round wire......which I assume is heat treated to have "spring tension". Unfortunately the wire is too small a diameter to do it's job effectively (for me, and apparently for many others). When the magazine release is depressed, the wire is slightly pushed to the side, and when released, the wire comes back to it's "straight configuration". Really a poor piece of design engineering in my opinion. That is why I mentioned exploring the possibility of "piggybacking" two sections of the wire to get more tension. John Browning would be ashamed and disgusted!!
Have a healthy, happy, prosperous, and peaceful New Year with bountiful blessings.
Best regards,
Jeffro
