pistol firing automatic

my custom carry elite today at the range decided to shoot fully automatic, it has not been shot since the last field strip and cleaning i took it apart at the range and did not see anything out of the ordinary, i have been told the spring and firing pin could have a problem and the shear could have a problem. what would be the actual cause, the spring and pin look fine. have heard that this has happened to other 1911 45's but i dont know the reason.

If it is a "II" model it might also be somethng to do with the firing pin safety. Either way you need to get it to your smith or back to Kimber ASAP.

Re: pistol firing automatic

check your trigger stop set screw. I had the same thing happen to me and all I had to do is screw in the stop screw in a little. I did take it back out and added some locktite to it and reinstalled.

Re: pistol firing automatic

VERY IMPORTANT!!!
Before you try to fire your pistol again, load only 2 rounds of ammo in the magazine. This way, if it should go full auto again, the possibility of it getting out of control and someone getting hurt is less.
Also, I would remove the firing pin and spring and clean the journal, pin and spring well with a good solvent and pipe cleaner, then I would use a lubricant designed for guns and put a light coat on the firing pin before reassembly.
Let us know how you make out.
