crazy kimber mag malf.

Hello!
I was wondering if anyone has ever seen this magazine malfunction. While teaching a ccw class, my Kimber Custom Stainless 2 had what initially looked like a FTF. Upon close inspection, I realized that the cartridge case had been pushed up into the feed lips of the mag. BTW it's a Kimber "KIM-PRO" Tac-Mag. I locked the slide open and tried to push the round back down into the mag, no way. It was stuck incredibly tight. The cartridge had only moved a fraction of an inch forward, but just enough to start to touch the frame ramp, which is super smooth. It was as if the slide had jammed the cartridge up into the feed lips, and now it wouldn't budge. Because the round was pushing the feed lips apart, it wouldn't eject from the pistol. Fearing for my safety, but wanting to clear the pistol, I GENTLY tapped the round from above with a wood dowel and a small brass hammer. I got it down just enough to start the mag moving down. I then had to strip out the bottom of the mag and grab it with pliers and pull it out with some effort. Crazy! There's no immediate action drill for that! I know about losing your feed lip geometry, but that seemed quite extreme. The magazine worked fine right up to that instant. Anybody out there ever heard of such a thing?

Re: crazy kimber mag malf.

I've range officered enough matches to have seen that one a time or three, and strangely enough with name brand pistols, shooting decent ammo, that normally functioned just fine. What you experienced would go beyond "malfunction" into the realm of "stoppage".

Only witnessed this problem with 1911s by the way, for whatever that is worth...

Re: crazy kimber mag malf.

Thanks for the reply,

Since I wrote that, I remembered that i've seen that one other time. During an IDPA match. It was also a 1911. I have a feeling it may have more to do with 1911 magazine construction than anything. I've had Chip McCormick and Wilson mags for a long time, and they never did that. I still have a couple more of those Kim-Pro Tac-Mags left. I'm going to keep using them at the range, but not in my carry piece anymore. I just ordered some of those fancy new Wilson ETM mags. My guess is that the feed lips weaken and finally give enough to allow the round to squeeze up in there. Do you agree? Or do you have a different theory?

I'm not sure I'm understandin' this one......You couldn't drive the round back down into the mag enough to bend the feed lips over ?????Did this round hangin' up expand the Mag to the width of the magwell ??? Where was the Mag expanded?
I've hung 10 rd. mags up from over insertion...Never saw a malfunction like You describe, but there is a lot of things I haven't seen

Re: crazy kimber mag malf.

this one prompted me to register on this site as i too have experienced problems w/ my kim-pro tac-mags in that the slide sometimes hangs up on the 1st or 2nd round. it'll just take a little nudge/tap and the slide will continue to move forward into the fire position but it's unnerving as hell.

I have a pretty-new Pro TLE II that i'm stillbreaking in so i'm not too worried about it but i'm curious as to whether anyone else has experienced problems w/ kim-pro tac-mags. do these mags just have too much tension in them or what?

Re: crazy kimber mag malf.

Not havein' the pistol in hand......If the pistol has a tight frame to slide fit or a bad fit up that seems tight ( Hickeys on slide and frame rubbin' each other) I'd try loadin' it down with Mobile 1 SYN. and shootin' the pistol plus hand cyclein' as much as time allows....Try a heaveier recoil spring, keep goin' up a pound or two at a time tttill You find one the slide likes. Be sure when You shoot the pistol Your thumbs don't touch the slide.....Get good mags, "Goes without sayin'"

Re: crazy kimber mag malf.

Hello Bill, I'll see if I can answer your questions. It wasn't driving the round down to bend the feed lips, the round had been driven up by the slide and wedged it between the feed lips. It bent the feed lips far enough out that the round was stuck tight and wouldn't budge, wedged between the lips, and the lips had been spread far enough that the mag wouldn't eject from the frame. I know what you mean by over insertion, that happened to me once when the forward weld on a mag bottom broke, and the mag went too far in. This was more dangerous I think, because the round was stuck so tight in the lips that I couldn't drive it back down to free the mag. So yes, the round expanded the mag beyond the width of the magwell, and it did it at the very top [feed lips]. I was afraid of a hard primer, and so didn't want to beat on it too hard. That's why I had to strip the bottom of the mag and yank it out from the bottom. It seems to me that the Kimber Tac-Mags might have too much give in the feed lips. I hope I explained it better. And durangotang, I've got 4 of those Tac-Mags and none of them ever stopped the slide. The mag spring tension seemed fine. I would agree with Bill and look at slide/frame slickness and recoil spring weight. Thanks for the replys. I would have responded sooner but my town lost power for 2 days.
