This is a series I and I just picked up new today. I checked under the foam padding in the case and found no disassemble tools. I would like to clean this pistol ( first 1911) so I have no idea where to start with this. Won't need a wrench right? It has the bushingless barrel. Looked at the booklet but figured someone with more knowledge than I have on this subject could help. Have'nt shot this pistol yet as it is spitting snow in Michigan. Picked up 100 rounds of Winchest 230gr. FMJ. Thanks in advance.

It's actually pretty simple. In reading the manual, you can see that you need a "tool" to take down your Compact. Kimber usually provides one, but a good ole' paperclip works just fine.
I use a heavier, thicker clip for good measure to be safe. You straighten the paperclip out in to a long "L". The bend, or base of the "L" should only be about an 1/8th to 1/4 of an inch long. This end inserts into the whole you see in the guide rod. The tool captures the recoil assembly-rod, plug, and spring. You then slowly relase the slide from locked back position. You can then remove the slide stop and then remove the slide entirely. The recoil assembly will come out of the slide.
To reassemble, simply reverse. It sounds way more complicated than it actually is.
Thanks for the info-ended up using a piece of wire. The book that came with mine must be for a Kimber w/a bushing barrel because it had directions for a wrench and everything...my first 1911 thanks again now I'm going to shoot my new pistol.
The same thing happened to me when I bought my SS Compact a couple of years ago. Wrong manual and no tool. I contacted Kimber and they sent me the proper manual and a tool. Also, my gun came with the older slotted grip screws. For my inconvenience, they tossed in the new hex grip screws for nothing. Satsified me!
But, the paperclip works just fine. Hope you come to like yours as much as I like mine. It's my favorite gun.
I agree with everyone above regarding disassembly. I also have a SS Compact, series one. I love that pistol. Great carry gun. Sam
