Link and pin

I am a new pistol shooter and am trying to learn some of the mechanics of the 1911. Yesterday I took my pistol apart to clean it and the pin holding the link just fell out, letting the link fall from the barrel. I have about 2200 rounds of Am Eagle 230 through the gun.
In the past this link-pin assemply has been seemingly very solid and has not separated during dissambly/cleaning.
My questions are: Is it still safe to shoot? Is this normal? Do I need to replace the link and pin as a maintence item? if so how does one take the pin out normally, with a punch?
Thanks for any help and for answering probably a very basic "Dumb butt" question.

The pin is normally removed with a pin punch while holding the barrel in such a manner that it will come out freely.
There is nothing wrong with your barrel. The link pin has to be tightened into the barrel mount (but not tightened in the link so it will not move) by tapping the edge of the pin with a center punch on both sides while the back side is supported so the pin will not work out during punching.
The link and pin are not normally removed from the barrel during routine cleaning or maintenance.
