I have 2 in 9x18 and shoot one regularly. I also have accumulated about a dozen mags for mine.

I only have one Makarov and it's a hi-cap 10 round Russian. It is my primary carry gun. I shoot it whenever I get the chance.

That's what the manual with my IJ70-18AH is marked. I seem to recall the manual originally had 12 rd. in it but was overlaid with another printed piece of paper (taped to the manual) that says 10 rd.. says there were some 12 rd. magazines made but are rare.

Anyway, I got the gun in its original box and aftermarket looking 10 rd. magazine. For a fistful of quarters more I got a magazine pouch with 2 10 rd. original type magazines with the dual spring system (upper and lower springs). I only use the aftermarket magazine for plinking. I also download the 2 "good" magazines to 9 rds. for everyday use. If I had an 8 rd. Makarov I would download to 7 rds. for everyday use also.

The hicap Makarov originally came with 12-round mags. The AWB legislation mandated that no pistol mag have more than 10 round capacity. Therefore, the ensuing imports of hicap Maks only came with 10-round mags.

I have 2 hicap Maks and have picked up a half dozen 12-rounders through the years and more of the 10-rounders.

The critical item is to stay away from the ProMag aftermarket mags. They are not reliable. Insist on the Russian made mags.

Here we have two versions of the Mak. The original Makarov PM which is 8 round, and now the Baikal 12 round (MP 442). The 12 round has a unique mag which is single stack for the top four rounds and double for the rest of them. Now a newer version of the same pistol is coming in 8 rounds, just like the old PM. A NIB costs around $350 while a used original PM might sell from $850 to even $1250!. Somehow people like the older Russian Maks that came to this area during the Afghan war. I think it s very good CC weapon.
