Customizing Production Gun vs buying limited production gun

Hi all. Need some help sorting out my thoughts. A few months ago I bought a Colt 1991A1 NRM, my second 1911. I thought my tax return was already spoken for. But turns out that money's free to spend. So I started plans to customize the Colt, price is about $800-$900 plus the Colt was $500. Well after pricing things out it seems like I'd be spending about the same as a limited production 1911 (Les Baer, Valtro, etc.). But the sum of the parts on the limited production gun would be of a higher quality than on the customized Colt (at my price range)? The Colt would still have the original barrel, series 80 safety parts, and other things. What are the reasons for customizing a production base gun rather than going with a limited production gun? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

The main advantage of a customized gun is getting exactly the parts and features you want; semi-custom guns offer little to no options. If your preferences aren't specific enough to know that you want something that you can't buy off-the-shelf, there really isn't alot of point to getting a pistolsmith custom job.

Of course, you should be able to get all the important performance-related stuff for $900, easy: trigger work, sights, and a match barrel. But I don't know what else you want to spend money on.

Don't sell the customization short. The semi's might give you a few better parts, but won't give you the same level of attention to detail and fitting that you'd get if you customize with the right smith.
