Years ago, most all accuracy barrels were 28" or even more.
Over the years they've been getting shorter since barrel length has no real effect on accuracy, and with just about everything using optics as sights, the longer sight radius is no longer any advantage.
Jeff Cooper didnt seem to have any problems with the short barrels on his Scout rifles.

At most you'll give up some range at the longer ranges, but not that many people shoot at ranges over 800 yards.
The most you have to loose is the cost of a barrel and the labor to have a new one fitted if it doesn't work out.

My police 308 is a 20". The armorers that set it up are the AMU/MTU Benning guys. Its accuracy will match anything in a longer practical length. Other officers with qualifications and 20"-26" barrels in normal urban settings cannot perform with any more accuracy.

Okay..I read His article on shortin barrels....World I live in and it may be because of the Louisisana and East Texas WOMEN I've been known to run with I don't think I want to shorten My barrel at all....I tend to go with the longer barrel the better , that is up to a certain point where there is nothin else to be gained in velocity....Guess this writer knows somethin I don't know but has it not always been a rule of thumb that losein' an inch of barrel equates to a 25 fps to 50 fps loss ? Is it just My North Louisiana world or is it world wide that a loss of fps equals a gain in trajectory....Quess I've been wastein' My time changein' a 280 case to the 30 Wild Bill and runnin' a 165gr bullet from a 24 in barrel at 3150 fps hopein' more speed would equate to a flatter shootin' rifle...One thing This writer fail to state or maybe document was the loss in fps for the inches cut off the barrel....Hittin a target at 1000yds proves [email protected]*k S#!t about what a rifle can do.....Some Yankee killed a Southern General at a hell of a long range with a rifle from the 1860s...Bill somebody kill an Indian at a long distance at Adobe Wells....Then again, ... ,Lt. Thomas Bolton swears by His Remmy 700 LTR in 308 Winny.....20 in barrel , and leaves His 7MM maggie in the safe....7 Mag shoots under 3/4 in. LTR shoots around 3/8in and less

thanks ya'll , bill in his article the loss of velocity is accounted for when he mentions having to increase the elevation an additional 2 MOA. as a long time reloader i under stand where your coming from. my friend has a 20" savage 10 in 308win. it shoots 1/2 moa groups. i guess what i'm thinking is hear in Ga. i don't plan on having to shot more than 500yrds on average. i will say with the shorter barrel it makes getting through the woods easier

Granted a short rifle is easier , somewhat, To ease around thru the woods , and Lt. Bolton says the LTR is the best balanced rifle He's ever seen , now that might be negated by the way deer are hunted in Louisiana at this time ....most huntin' is done on leases from stands that have more luxuries than most homes do....most ride HiDollar 4 wheelers close to their stand and cover them with camo so it amounts more to deer shootin' than deer huntin' as We knew it back in late 50s , early 60s....anyway , not condemmin' any hunters , My stand has been called the PENTHOUSE complete with Hot & Cold Runnin' Women...longest shot I've got is 300 yds so it's pretty much point blank for the 30 Wild Bill...I park My Z 71 between two salt water tanks on a gas well site, 89yds to walk to the penthouse , keep a lot of corn on the ground ,salt blocks and feed plots.....guess My point is a 24 in barrel causes Me no problem at all

mchael, IMHO a 20' barreled Savage 110 in .30-06 with a good piece of glass on it will drop a deer like a bad habit @ 500 yds. I like them Nosler Partition bullets for that kinda work......

sweet load

i found the sweet load for my gun is a 168grn Hornady A-max over a 52grn charge of hogden h414with a magnum primer, in a federal or rem. case, this load has produced a 3shot group that can be cover by a dime with room to spare, a 10 shot group that i cover w/ a nickle. at 300 yards best group was 3 shot just under 2" average around 2.5 but that's probably me not the gun i will use this load as a starting point, if i'm real lucky i won't have to change much after shorting the barrel. how short to go? 20",18",16", what ever i deside its going to get an ACC quick attach flash hider for the can that will come later.
