That revolver is a rare S&W Model 66 Combat Magnum with a 3" inch barrel.
The original insert was the standard red.
Red doesn't show up nearly as well in bad light, so I like white dot sights for combat use.

I removed it and made a new black insert from a handy solvent-proof screwdriver handle. (Today I'd cast in a black insert using epoxy glue and black model paint mixed together).
I then put in a very shallow oval shaped hole and filled it with Gloss White paint.

When looking through the sights, the white oval on the slanted sight blade appears to be a round dot.
I use the dot just like the three dots of most automatics.
I center the dot in the rear sight notch.
In bad light I use the dot, in good light I use the actual front sight.

What's needed with these dot sights is that the dots align the sights to the same point of impact as the actual steel sights do.
In other words, you don't want the aligned dots to be shooting one place and the iron sights shooting another because the dots were mis-placed.
You see this a lot even today with factory guns.

I intended to put a white bar on the rear sight blade to have a Von Stavenhagen type sight set up, but it works so well as-is that i just left it with the front dot.

I also did my standard 2 1/2" Model 66:

You are THE MAN, dfariswheel ! ! Those are two beautiiful revolvers. I use the Pachmayr Compacs on my 2 1/2" 686 no dash 7 shooter also. I don't like the finger grooves either That's quite a sight you have there. What attention to detail---the white OVAL on the slant, that appears as a round DOT. You certainly did your homework. That's quite an accomplishment, to get the dots and the blades shooting to the same POI. Thanks for sharing this with me. Have a great Christmas, and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.
