Tweaking a pump

I have a Remington 760 in .30-06 that belonged to my father. On a good day with moderate handload (150 gr. at 2400fps) it shoots 4-5 MOA. Factory loads are even worse.

What can one do to make a 760 more accurate, short oftrading it for a bolt action?

Thanks

I know you'll find some really good ideas in Accurizing the Factory Rifle by M. L. McPherson.

Here's one link: Amazon.com: Accurizing the Factory Rifle (9780967094830): M. L. McPherson: Books

Thanks for the reply.

Why bother to mess with my old beater pump? I can buy a new one for almost 2,000 from these folks.

Custom Remington 7400 7600 750 Rifles Accuracy Systems Gunsmith Gunsmithing

Maybe they would come down on the price if I bought two at the same time?

And maybe the Federal Gov't is going to stop borrowing money.

Well the only option I see is to modify it or buy a new one.

Cohee...is that 5" group druk or sober....Knowin You Redneck HillBillys , I kinow the answer.....Never seen a rifle that belonged to a Redneck HillBilly for one season that didn't need the barrel recrowned....You can't jamm the muzzle into 4" of goat dookey ,skoal ,and red clay mud on a rusted out pickup floorboard and still expect 1/2" groups.....

Wild Bill,

Whur you been boy? You ain't tried to needle me for months.

I represent your inference. It was shooting 5-6 inches when sober. However my cousin Cooter, I find out, used the barrel for a jack handle when he had a flat tire on his Studebaker pickup. Wish that boy would quit buying five dollar used tires.

After that, it shot nice buckshot patterns.

Can a master gunsmith like you bend my barrel back to 5" groups?

My Son.....Have You ever heard of a "CATTLE GAP" some parts of this country called a"CATTLE GUARD"...in North Louisiana , usually made of scrap oilfield pipe or old railroad iron....Just insert the barrel in the space between the long iron and been or bend the barrel in the direction it needs to go...Don't need a MASTER Gunsmith for this job....maybe put the barrel in a piece of fairly close fittin PVC to protect the finish

cohee , thought about you and JohnT this past Sat....Went to the world championship TILLER RACES in Emerson Arkansas ....[ think they are on youtube]...DAMM SURE looked like a lot of YAW'LLS kinfolk there

Wild Bill

edit....this years race is on youtube along with other years...see menstillerraceMP4 byjustjohn....Picked up a jap ARISKA in a junk store , canvess strap , mum still on receiver, $65.00

Bill,

None of my kin have been anywhere near this place since my cousin Mumford got banned for life. He got caught runnin' nitro in a gas class tiller race.

Somebody tol' me that you got beat by a 9 year old girl in the 2011 purple hull pea shelling contest at the Emerson purple hull pea festival, which sponsors the tiller races.

You oughta know by now that you can't beat them arkies at three card monte, jacklighting deer, or shelling purple hull peas.

Yeah Buddy....FoeRodJo on the Nitro....one HAND was TACHIN His Tiller up just before the Startin Lady droped the flag , my Sweethart ,Janis said "that one smells different" bear in mind We were 100ft away settin on a Farmall Super M...race is over , pit crew is loadin up fast , I walked over , ask , " Straight ALKE or Nitrous MIX"....Hand just grined a toothless Arkie grin and winked....

Back to the peashellin , Brother You and JohnT have a way of makein Me look bad by half truths an insinuration....if it is not the whole truth it is a lie.....That was a bunch of years ago , I can't remember all the details but I know I wasn't beat....I won....but there was a problem with a double bottom bowl that could possibly have hidden previously shelled PURPLEHULLS....I was not disqualified...but it went something like "cheaters never win"..."if You sorry enough to cheat in a PeaShellin , You'll DAMM SHOR cheat in a White Perch tourney".....Sore losers if You ask Me but bein a WINNER ain't always an easy thang...."Some must bear the Cross" as My Preacher GrandPa William Harris Caldwell once said
