Inner city type, I'd look at a Remington 870. In rural areas I'd probably just go for a side by side, with extra shells either on a sling or a butt-cuff. I'm not sure how much logic is in my decision, but that's what I'd have. I know my SxS goes bang everytime, and would feel comfortable being my only long gun out of the city, but I'd have my handgun at the ready as well, for any instance. I've had 870's, Benneli Supers' and SxS's....when the ish hits the fan, K.I.S.S. is a damn fine principal. Awareness is far more important than how many shots you have IMHO, practice like you mean it! Remeber: The Best Laid Plans seldom survive the first engagement. |

Personally I like the Mossberg 500 12 Ga. magnum, it has a 20" smooth bore with a rifle sight. It is smaller, lighter, and more maneuverable than an 870, but packs the same firepower. Mine takes 3 inch magnum #4 shot in the tube alternating with #00 buckshot. JeffVN |

| The package
There are some nice shotguns out there, including some nice custom work shotguns that are ported. There are many military and LE people who use the 870 or a Mossberg. They also have the most accessories available for them. I have a Rem 870 Express Mag Home Defense that I removed the stock on and easily installed a pistol grip stock folder with a sling on. It is made by Knoxx and is called the COPstock. See below. I can shoot a 3" mag, holding the gun out arms length with only my hand no problem, and the felt recoil has got to be 50%. It is a sweet set-up that I am sure you would enjoy-a lot. Since the 870 has a longer forend, it will interfere with the stock in the folded position. You would also need to get the Hogue short forend to install on the gun as well if you go with the COPstock. It too, is sweet. While not cheap $130.00 for the set-up, you will not believe what it does for this gun package. http://www.knoxx.com/NewStyleKnoxx/P...s/COPstock.htm |

Remington 870 because that is the one I have trained with and am most familiar with. If I had the money, I'd like to get a Winchester SX2 Practical to try out. |

Pretty hard to beat the Mossberg 500 series. Well-made, reliable and very reasonably priced.

Winchester 1300 defender The position of the safety on a Remington doesn't make sense. |
