What is the opinion of the used police dept. trade-in 5906's I see for sale at reasonable prices, for non-LEO?

Police trade ins are more often than not guns that were carried daily and shot very rarely, so most represent a great value. Check it over, some were actually carried by gun guys who shot them a lot, others did not shoot them, but they did not maintain them either!

I bought a police trade-in S&W 5906 from ZANDER and have been very pleased. The one I got was reportedly factory reconditioned, and seemed to be AS-NEW. It had new grips. Shoots accurately and is reliable. It is even 100% reliable with my cast bullet handloads. Great handgun for $300. gold40 |

I have had serveral of assorted Smith autos that were police tradeins. They are ugly as day old scat and outweigh two bricks, however, everyone of them were more accurate that I could hold and never jammed or malfunctioned. I have a couple laying around as 'house guns' but no longer try to carry them except for a 3913 single stack that has an alloy frame. Some folks, including me, think that these little single stacks are the best carry gun ever made. Back to your quetion about the 5906, if the price is right, jump on it. Then PM me for a deal on a couple of mags. |

I ordered a Pair along with ten extra magazines from Centerfire Systems. Im still hand buffing them with first Simichrome and then "Mother's Mag"; and they're still nowhere near as bright as Bright Nickel. I may have to find a more aggressive Polishing Product. You'll have to get Hogue Grips for it--to the best of my knowledge, no one else makes Wood Grips for it. I think Stag is pretty well out of the question. Saxon Violence |

I bought my 5906 PD trade-in several years ago, and it was rough, but the price was right. I had the slide bead blasted back to S&W Matte and put new S&W plastic grips on it and it looks great, and is a good shooter.
