| Model 66 Barrel Change??
I have a model 66 with a 4" barrel....any possibility of having it changed to a 3" length? I am not interested in this being a collector piece, instead I want to make it more concealed carry friendly if possible. Thanks in advance for input. |

Most of the time, assumein' the smith has the right tools, this is an easy swap but.....with all things goin' for You ( as in workin' on any thing mechanical ) it can be tedious and time consumein'. Gettin' the barrel to index and gettin' the correct cylinder gap will involve lathe work but can be done by a skillfull file operator. There is always a chance of bending the frame. A "DUD" I knew (local yokal deputy sheriff ) took a class on S&Ws at Murray State College ,Tishamingo Ok......, went back to the department and started changein' out barrels on the Smiths. Bad part is He was sleepin' when the instructor said "drive this pin out before You crank on the frame with a 36" Stillson." Now , granted lots of Us do things to firearms that arn't necessary......Lots of Us buy firearms We don't need, We just want Them, and We owe no one an apology for the doin' or buyin' or wantin'....With that said, I got My old Smith model 19 out of the safe (this one is a 19 no dash from 1957 ) 4'' barrel, bare in mind I haven't carried a revo in a bunch of years.....Mexicano carry , right side behind hip, under a sweat shirt or cross draw left side, hands in surrender position I was doin' one second draws. I doubt I'd be much faster with a 3" pistol. Bill Caldwell |

Thanks Bill.... I think you are right about the draw times. I am carrying it now IWB as I type in one of my MasonDixon convertible holsters. The only real benefit is a reduction in the draw stroke so my old shoulder does not have to work so hard. I have a good gunsmith that I would trust it to, I just am not sure it would be worth the cost vs b uying a new 686 3" or 3" j-frame....or heck, even a Ruger 3". Thank you again for your help. Brock....I went to Your web site, Your work looks to be top of the line.......MasonDixson looks to be one that might work for me....Do You make the Mason Dixon for a Colt ComMander? When the weather is cool enough I carry Mexicano style , hip or cross draw. Louisiana is HOT most of the time, I'll wear a tee shirt next to My skin, pistol outside the tee, muscle shirt hangin' loose over the pistol and belt. Cooler weather a sweatshirt replaces the muscle shirt. Might not work for anybody else but I find it unbeatable for convenience, gettin' it on quick' and go, etc. But.....confortable, No...lots of time it ain't. Instead of shortenin' that 66 barrel You might consider one of the round butt 19s with a 2 1/2" barrel Bill Caldwell |

You could have it sawn off an inch. About $200 from SDM which is probably less than the price of a new barrel - there never were many 3" M66s - and the fitting.

Another way to look at this: Due to the relative scarcity** of 3" Model 66s, if you started saving and looking for one now, by the time you find one you'll have likely saved enough moolah to buy it on the spot. ** I oughta know about this. Foolishly traded away my first 3" M-66, very quickly regretted it, and spent about 4 years scouring gun shows all over the region for a replacement. This one ain't on the sell/trade list. Sometimes I have to  at myself. |
