S&W Model 36 Chiefs Special Sights

I went to the range yesterday to brush-up with this nice little .38. I was able to do quite well (accuracy) at 7 yards with no sunglasses on. When I shot with my polarized sunglasses on, the accuracy went to h*ll. I can’t get the proper sight picture as I can’t see the front sight clearly, and the target was shaded as well.

Can those familiar with the Model 36 tell me if other sights could be added? The rear sight is just a “grove” and the front is ramp, which buy the way, I painted white (no help.)

I just purchased a Lady Smith and will probably have the same scenario.

Any suggestions?

Re: S&W Model 36 Chiefs Special Sights

The S&W Chief's Special had a front sight forged in one piece with the barrel, so the sight is not replaceable.
Most later S&W revolvers have front sights that are pinned in the barrel and can be replaced.
Likely you Lady Smith will be pinned in and can be replaced.

Since the rear sight of a fixed sight revolver is nothing much more than a groove in the frame, there's nothing much you can do about it.
You might try painting the front sight with red or bright lime green paint, or you can have a gunsmith install a colored insert into the front sight by cutting a dovetail in it and installing an insert.

If the glasses cause trouble with seeing the sights, the simple "fix" is taking them off.
The limits on making changes is one down side to fixed revolver sights.

If it's a carry gun, i would consider crimson trace laser grips. They would solve your problem @ close combat/legal self defense ranges. Shoot someone @ 50'-75' and you're going to jail.............
