XD Sight Removal
Have a new XD45 and trying to replace the sights w/o success yet. It's dovetail and I know it's standard left to right removal, but this sucker is tight and my sight removal toll is not budging it. And I don't want to apply maximum force yet. I don't want to mar or screw it up. It's not peened or set screwed in placed it's just tight!!! Suggestions please . . . thanks in advance.

I have two XD45's.
From what I can gather, removing the factory sights is a royal PITA. Some folks resort to putting the slide in the freezer for a few hours before getting a brass punch and a very big hammer. As far as I know there is no dedicated sight pusher for the XD. There is a $500+ one-size-fits-all pusher available from Brownells. I believe there is a Sig sight pusher that can be modifed to work on an XD if you are real good with a file.

Do a search here. You'll get plenty of information about removing and installing sights on an XD.
FWIW. I am sending my guns here to get them worked on. Rather pay a pro to do it.

XD sights are a royal pain. We require that they be checked in by customers for sight replacement instead of while-you-wait like most other dove tailed sight designs. I usually have to resort to very carefully removing them with a steel punch and a good sized hammer. I actually had a front sight once that I had to split in half to get it out.

Thanks for the input fellas . . . I appreciate it very much. I may take it to my local gunsmith/shop where I bought it from and have them remove the sights as they are experienced w/XD's.

Well I took my XD45 to my Gunshop/smith and had them remove the sights. Took them no time at all, he broke down the pistol, took the slide in the back (unfortunetly I couldn't go back and watch him) but I could hear the Ding-ding-ding-ding of the hammer and punch doing it's thing and they were off. No damage or scarring. Plus he mounted the new ones for me . . . ding-ding-ding-ding and done. Was worth the trip accross town to have it done the first time. They swapped them out did a quick caliper adjustment for alignment and had me check out the alignment to my satisfaction. Charged me a ten spot to do all that . . . Can't beat that and their service. That's what keeps me coming back.
Happy with the Truglo's and looking forward to getting to the range this week to try them out.

Springfield XD factory sights are notoriously tough to remove. I advise using some KROIL penetrating oil and a sight pusher. I found a good on for $60 on the glockstore.com website Sight Master Site Pusher Tool).
A hammer and punch may be necessary, and its reasonable to assume that you may in fact break or damage the factory sights when removing them with a hammer and punch. The sight pusher is strongly preferred and very much so when installing the new sights.
