Centaur Systems Ray Herriott barrelmaker

Does anyone remember Ray. He was the owner of Centaur systems. The guy used to produce some nice barrels and always tried something different. I own two of his barrels now and they are excellent. If anyone has a centaur barrel that they wish to sell post here with info on how to contact you.

They were unique! I don't think I've ever seen a barrel so mirror-bright inside.

He made a great barrel. Wish that I could find some that aren't trashed out. I keep fishing the net but no luck.

Yeah, I remember Centaur. I put one of their comped barrels on a 1911 years ago. It had a slide stop with a slot cut in it. You put shims in the slot and a roller bearing on top until the barrel locked up tight. Very innovative. Then they just dissapeared.

I had forgotten about it until you mentioned it.

The system had merit and worked but that is the way that things happen some times in the world of pistols. My problem is that I like the stuff from the "old days". I really don't like the comps that just stick out on the end of a barrel. If I do another pistol and comp it I would have to have a full profile design. To me it just looks better.

Centaur Systems barrels

Yeah, I remember his stuff! It works very well, and yes I've still got mine and no it's not for sale. The thing I like about his system is the way you compensated for wear. Actually I had two of his barrel/comp systems, I sold the commander length barrel. I sure wish I didn't sell the commnander barrel, that is one sweet barrel and comp!

I remember Ray

I remember Ray very well ! He used to date my mother and I used to help him in his shop in Monrovia, CA. He had a partner named Bob Spurlock as well. He was very talented at gunsmithing and we used to go to the range often to try his creations out. Centaur also had an electronics section and Ray and Bob engineered and built amplifiers and mixers for musicians. Ray was a talented drummer and used to play at Pikes Verdugo Oaks in Glendale, CA.
