A D Swenson slide

.....recently at a Ft.Myers Florida show, I acquired a really nice slide (whole top end but the barrel was not usable). The seller did not realize what the AD Swenson on the disconnector ramp was.....curiously it's an early series 70 in 9mm. I'm building a single stack 38 super gun to Armand's memory/tribute, using an old Caspian frame and a Caspian ramped barrel. It's a hard chrome full size gov't , S & W sights with the dovetail filler, which has 30/in lines on it, but there is a 3/16" button ahead on the front screw with the letter 'M' on it. The front sight has an insert cutout for color. The whole top is marvelously stippled with a french panel line below it. I'm thrilled to handle something he built.

Armand Swenson. What a great guy. I just started shooting in the late 80's, and I forget why I was looking for a gunsmith, but found his name in directory... Had no idea he really was "The Man". So I called the number listed, and struck up a conversation. We wound up talking about boxers, like Carmen Basilio, who taught Phys Ed at LeMoyne College when I was there in 72/73. He didn't do any customer work anymore, but he invited me over. So I drove out and met him and his wife, and they made me feel like one of the family.

Then he showed me his workshop and some of his firearms. It was THEN that I realized I was in the presence of greatness. I'll never forget the 98 Mauser he showed me. It was a work of art. I don't think I could have ever actually fired a round in it; it belonged in a glass case, so that everyone could see what the BEST looked like. And he was showing me these magnificent 45's one after the other; there seemed no end to the supply! And each one was flawless. The checkering... the mainspring housings, the slide to frame fit, the triggers, the ambi safeties... Wow.

Mr and Mrs Swenson were among the nicest people I have ever met in my life. Some may say his work wasn't as magnificient as I remember it. Perhaps so. Just don't say it around me. Anyone fortunate enough to own a piece of his craftsmanship truly owns something very very special.

Swenson slide

..well guess what...I queried the dealer I got the slide from and he got a little grumpy...seems he had someone ask him about the whole gun and he'd sold the slide off.........woops.....anyway, with some talking I was able to purchase the complete lower which is a 70L-xxxxx... probably right, as the slide was 9mm.........
the frame is typically Swenson...squared trigger guard, his 30 line checkering on the front strap and the trigger guard....hard chrome, his safeties, etc. Somebody put in a Videki trigger which is wrong, I believe. I put in a Barsto non ramped 9mm barrel which he used, and the gun is as complete as I can make it....looks a lot like the photo that someone posted................I am overjoyed to have a complete Swenson!

a Vedecki trigger would have been right in the later guns...which a 9mm would have been.
