P88 Full Size: Shoot it or Lock it away.
Just wanted to get some opinions.
I have a NIB Walther P88 Full Size that I have kept in the safe for about 5 years. Should I take it out and shoot it? Some people advise me not to shoot it since it's a collector's item. Is it? What do you guys think?

While it is a well mad, very accurate pistol and a fine example of German craftsmanship, there does not seem to be many shooters out there who appreciate what they are or even know what they are.
In time, the P88 may gain some collector value but until that time comes...they are just another discontinued high capacity 9mmx19 pistol to most. :-?
I bought one a few years back when I was more into the Walther line. I've tried to sell it a couple of times to fund another high priced 1911 and found that there are not many takers. When you find someone interested, they want to pay very little for such a high quality weapon.
I'm not a real "collector" so I would tell you to take your P88 out and enjoy it. I do mine every once in awhile.

I second the motion to shoot it. Mine is probably the most accurate 9mm (after my SIG P210) that I own. I got it after shooting one at my gun club. A few rounds down range and I had to have one. I doubt any future collector value will be seriously reduced by careful use of it. In any event - the fun you have shooting it will more than offset any reduced value

My solution was to buy a P88 NIB and save it, and a P88C LNIB and shoot it. The P88 has a *long* trigger reach and I cannot even pull it without changing my grip.
I don't find them to be as nice as a P210, but I decided to get them anyway, just in case I wish I had one later. Are they better than a Sig P226? Probably not but I don't really know.

I bought my P88 for a song, $725 and this included 2 High Cap (HC)magazines. I do not think any 10 rounders were ever made for the full sized P88 and the HCs are expensive. Whether to shoot it or not is up to you, I can't answer the question for you. Hell, OK I shot mine but I own no safe queens. Enjoy the gun and let your children fret over the fact that it was fired. Regards, Richard
