New P99 with some questions

I stopped at my friendly gunsop and they had two P99 pistols. Both .40; one an Interarms import with a KI date stamp and a serial of 400XXX, the other a Walther USA LLC import with no stamp either on the side of the frame near the rail or under the front with a serial of 406XXX. I looked and found no other date marks.

The Interarms had one mag (orange follower), box, and one additional grip backstrap (installed and extra are the smaller type). The Military had the box, booklet and papers, two mags (orange followers), two extra backstraps, mag tool, and three extra sights with hex wrench.

Both were the same price so I bought (actually traded) for the Military model.

I looked at the P99 FAQ page and have a general idea when the military was made, but does anyone have an idea whether there is a date stamp somewhere else or some other idea when it was manufactured?

Are the aftermarket barrels to convert to 9mm drop in for the .40?

Thanks any other info would be appreciated.

I believe the closest you can get to determining the date your P99 was manufactured was the year, as indicated by the two letters on the frame.

Regarding a drop-in barrel to convert to 9 mm, I have not seen anyone note this as an option.

There is no date on the frame. Apparently I have one of the 5000 that had slides and barrels made by S&W, but I don't know the timeframe for that maufacturing run.

There will be no date code on your p99 since date codes are only used by the german proof houses that proof german made firearms. I would think that if you call Smith & Wesson with the serial # (or e-mail them from their website) they will give you the year of manufacture. Even though your frame says "Made in Germany" it was shipped to S&W and they assembled the pistol with their slide and barrel. I had one of these with the orange followers a few years ago and had alot of problems with feeding reliablility and also the slide prematurely closing upon insertion of a fresh magazine. I have read that S&W has redesigned the followers in blue and light blue to solve some of these problems (at no cost) if you experience them.
