Between me and my Dad we're owned a few long slides over the years. Never bought one that worked reliably. But never paid more than 350 for one either. In my experience they can be made reasonably good shooters with just some attention to detail. Deburring every surface is a good start

their hammers, sears, safeties were soft as butter. Replace them. The barrel is a 2 piece affair, with a copper bead right across the feed ramp, which tends to not let swc's feed worth a hoot. $300, tops and only if you know how to do basic 1911 smithing and have those spare parts. I had to grind a groove where the solder line is, and fill in the groove with steel welding rod, to get the danged thing to feed swc's.

you can make one, but really, why bother? the .45 super offers 185 grs at 1400 fps, almost 800 ft lbs.
