My EMP has less than 250 rounds through it but I'm getting occasional fail to fire hits with it. I suspected a weak firing pin spring but when I called Springfield they said it was probably the opposite. In order to meet the california drop test requirements, they use a titanium firing pin with a extra heavy spring. The problem is they won't sell me a steel firing pin with the appropriate spring because I live in california. My question is will a 1911 firing pin fit?
I checked Brownels and Midway but nothing fits. They could not cross the Springfeld part (PI0210S) to any other part. I could send the gun back and they would correct it but I hate to send it off just for a minor part that I could replace. Any suggestions?
These are pretty much straight 1911 copies, but there are differences in many 1911 versions in the size of the firing pin hole in the slide breech face and in the hole in the firing pin retainer plate.
All I can suggest is to buy an inexpensive standard 1911 firing pin and check to see if it will fit in, or can be modified to fit.
Brownell's sell quality 1911 series 9mm/.38 Super and .45 ACP size steel firing pins made by companies like Wilson, Nowlin, EGW.
You can also contact Brownell's and ask if a standard pin will fit your gun.
Their Tech Staff is very good.
You can also contact Wilson Combat and ask if their steel pins will interchange.
I'm pretty sure the length is different too. Mine measures 2.1630 in in length. The advantage of the EMP is that it should be more reliable in feeding since you don't need a spacer in the magazine because the magazines are purpose built, not modified.
The average 1911 pin is 2.295", and may run long enough to need shortening.
The Series 80 average is a shorter 2.262 to 2.265".
Possibly a standard .45 pin could be shortened if the diameter is the same as the Springfield.
Diameter of the standard and Series 80 pins runs from 0.095" to 0.096".
9mm and .38 Super pins run from 0.070" to 0.071" at the tip.
I have two EMPs, a 3" and a 4". Both exhibit barely sufficient primer strikes - noticeably shallower than any of my other 1911s. I haven't yet had any failures to fire, but I definitely think it's a problem and intend to take it up with Springfield when I get time.
I'm told it's a consequence of the titanium firing pin. I believe that, but I ive in Texas and can get it replaced. In California I guess trying to polish it as suggested is the only option under the letter of the law.
